The Emperor was placed on the pyre and as the torch was applied to the base of the pyre, an eagle was released from the summit of the burning mound, symbolizing the ascent of Augustus's soul to the gods. Sometimes, the eagle's feathers were also used to carry importance in war ceremonials and in healing rituals. Indian tribes from the Central and Southern American regions developed their own customs of acquiring the sanctified eagle feathers which were considered to be powerful and revered possessions.
