The Aztecs for instance bound a strong link of the eagles to the sun and compared the daily journey of the sun to an eagle's flight and journey during the day. The Romans too held eagles to have a special place in their lives. When the Roman Emperor Augustus died in A.D.14, his body was taken to the the Campus Martius where a towering funeral pyre awaited him. The Emperor was placed on the pyre and as the torch was applied to the base of the pyre, an eagle was released from the summit of the burning mound, symbolizing the ascent of Augustus's soul to the gods. Sometimes, the eagle's feathers were also used to carry importance in war ceremonials and in healing rituals. Indian tribes from the Central and Southern American regions developed their own customs of acquiring the sanctified eagle feathers which were considered to be powerful and revered possessions.
