The great blue heron is a regal and distinctive bird found in marshes, tidal flats, shores of ponds and lakes as well as rivers. Their diet is typically fish, frogs, lizards, salamanders, small crustaceans and sometimes, snakes. Blue herons are thought to grow to a height of 38"-52" in their natural habitat. Known to be social, blue herons move in large flocks and breed in colonies. They sometimes find it easier to search for their prey in flocks rather than singly. The other reason why blue herons sometimes live in colonies is to protect themselves against predators since the chaotic grouping of their flock can occasionally confuse the attacker!
