often came to be known, was born in 1195 in
Lisbon, Portugal. His parents, the Bulhoms,
named him Fernando. At age 15, Saint Anthony
entered the religious order of St. Augustine.
His devotion to Christ meant that Saint Anthony
preferred the sanctity of quiet solitude and the
monastery life at St. Augustine did not allow
him time with his solitude with God. Old friends
often paid the young Saint Anthony a visit
oftentimes engaging in political discussions and
topics of the world that prevented him from
